Volkszählung, lat. census, statistische Erhebung zur Ermittlung der Größe und Zusammensetzung der Bevölkerung eines Staates. Schon in vorchristlicher Zeit gab es Volkszählungen bei den Chinesen, Ägyptern und Juden. Bei den Römern war der Census die Schätzung aller röm. Staatsbürger des Weltreichs nach ihrem Vermögen als Grundlage für die Militärdienstpflicht, die Steuer und die Zuweisung politischer Rechte. Die in der  Weihnachtsgeschichte (Lukas 2, 1-3) von Kaiser Augustus befohlene und von seinem Statthalter Quirinius in Syrien durchgeführte Volkszählung wird von Historikern auf das Jahr 8 v. Chr. datiert und könnte sich bis ins Jahr 7 v. Chr. hingezogen haben ( Stern). Allein hierdurch gilt als erwiesen, dass die „christliche Zeitrechnung”, die erst von Dionysius Exiguus im 6. Jh. aufgestellt wurde, auf einer falschen Berechnung beruht.

For the Romans the census was an estimation of all Roman citizens of the Empire in terms of their wealth as a basis for the military duty, taxes and the allocation of political rights. The census held in the Christmas story ( Weihnachtsgeschichte) (Luke 2, 1-3) ordered by Emperor Augustus and carried out by his governor Quirinius in Syria is dated by historians to the year 8 B.C. and could have taken until the year 7 B.C. ( Stern / star). This is considered the only proof that the ”Christian calendar“ which was only drawn up by Dionysius Exiguusin the 6th century, is based on an incorrect calculation.
