Stille Nacht, dt. gilt als das berühmteste Weihnachtslied der Welt. Erst in neuester Zeit wurde der Hilfspriester und spätere Vikar Joseph Mohr (* 1792  † 1848) als Verfasser des Liedtextes identifiziert:

(1) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Alles schläft, einsam wacht nur das traute hochheilige Paar, „Holder Knabe im lockigen Haar, schlaf in Himmlischer Ruh’, schlaf in himmlischer Ruh’!” (2) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Gottes Sohn, o wie lacht Lieb’ aus deinem göttlichen Mund, da uns schlägt die rettende Stund’: Christ, in deiner Geburt. Christ, in deiner Geburt. (3) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht, die der Welt Heil gebracht; aus des Himmels goldenen Höhn, uns der Gnaden Fülle lässt sehn: Jesum in Menschengestalt. Jesum in Menschengestalt. (4) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Wo sich heut’ alle Macht väterlicher Liebe ergoss, und als Bruder huldvoll umschloss Jesus die Völker der Welt. Jesus die Völker der Welt. (5) Stille Nacht! Heilige Nacht! Am Vormittag des Heiligen Abends 1818 in Oberndorf in der Nähe von Salzburg zeigte Mohr den Text seinem Freund, dem im benachbarten Arnsdorf lebenden Lehrer Franz Gruber (* 1787 †  1863), der die Melodie für die Gitarre komponierte, da die Orgel nicht funktionierte. Das Lied wurde wenige Stunden später, während der Christmette, mit den Mitgliedern einer bäuerlichen Sängergruppe in der Oberndorfer Kirche uraufgeführt und hat seither seinen festen Platz unter den „Top Ten” deutscher Weihnachtslieder stets behaupten können.

Silent Night, is deemed the world's most famous Christmas carol ( Weihnachtslied). Only in more recent times was the curate and later vicar Joseph Mohr (* 1792 † 1848) identified as the author of the lyrics of the song:

On the morning of Christmas Eve in 1818 in Oberndorf close to Salzburg Mohr showed the lyrics to his friend, the tutor Franz Gruber (* 1787 † 1863) living in the neighboring Arnsdort, who composed the melody for the guitar since the organ was not working. The song premiered a few hours later during Christmas Mass ( Christmette) with the members of a group of peasant singers at the Oberndorf church and ever since has its fixed place among the top ten of German Christmas carols ( Weihnachtslieder).
