Jedenfalls mussten die hochschwangere Maria und ihr Verlobter Josef mit einer behelfsmäßigen Unterkunft vorlieb nehmen, weil wegen der von Augustus angeordneten Volkszählung alle Herbergen rund um Jerusalem überfüllt waren. Der Stall wird unterm Christbaum als Krippe nachgebildet, wobei Ochse und Esel an seinen ursprünglichen Verwendungszweck gemahnen. Beide Tiere, die seit dem 13. Jh. auf vielen bildlichen Darstellungen als „Tierammen“ dargestellt werden, die sich rührend um das Neugeborene kümmern, kommen in den Evangelien der Bibel in diesem Zusammenhang nicht vor; allerdings nennt sie ausdrücklich das apokryphe Evangelium des Pseudomatthäus als Zeugen der Geburt Jesu.

The stable is created under the Christmas tree ( Christbaum) as a nativity scene ( Krippe) whereby the ox and donkey ( Esel) are reminiscent of its original purpose of use. Both animals which have been illustrated since 13th century on many images as "foster-mothers" which touchingly look after the newly born are not mentioned in this context in the Bible's gospel; however, the apocryphal gospel of Pseudo-Matthew expressly names them as witnesses to the birth of Jesus.
