Nüsse, trockene Schließfrüchte mit holzartig ausgebildeter Fruchtknotenwand, deren Samen ein Nusskern ist; seit Urzeiten als lagerungsfähiges Nahrungsmittel für die Winterzeit geschätzt und als solches unentbehrliche Leckerei in der Weihnachtszeit. Die Hülle der Nuss versinnbildlicht in der christlichen Symbolik das Fleisch Christi, das die Bitterkeit der Passion gekostet hat, die harte Schale das Holz des Kreuzes, der Kern das süße Leben nach der Erlösung. - Früher wurden Nüsse auf Fäden gezogen und in den Christbaum gehängt ( Christbaumschmuck). Als Zutat zu weihnachtlichen Backwaren ( backen, Lebkuchen, Marzipan, Spekulatius) und auf dem Gabenteller unterm Christbaum sind die verschiedenen Nuss-Arten (Haselnuss, Walnuss, Paranuss u. a.) unentbehrlich.
