Messias, griech. Umformung von hebr. maschiach, „der Gesalbte”, im Alten Testament der von Gott durch eine Salbung geweihte Herrscher Israels. Christos (lat. Christus) ist die griech. Übersetzung des Wortes Messias. Nach den Prophezeiungen im Alten Testament muss der erwartete Messias ein direkter Nachkomme König Davids sein (2. Buch Samuel 7, 12-13). Unter seiner Regentschaft sollen alle Juden aus ihrem Exil wieder in die Heimat zurückkehren (Jesaja 11, 12) und der Tempel in Jerusalem wird wieder aufgebaut (Hesekiel 37, 26-27). Eine Zeit des Weltfriedens bricht an (Micha 4, 3) und alle Juden werden Gottes Gesetze achten (Hesekiel 37, 24). Die gesamte Menschheit wird den jüdischen Gott anbeten (Jesaja 66, 23). Da Jesus nur einige dieser Bedingungen erfüllte, folgte das Judentum nicht dem christlichen Glauben, dass er der verheißene Messias sei. Jesus selbst hat sich in den Evangelien nur einmal als Messias „geoutet”. Eine Samariterin sagte zu ihm: „Ich weiß, dass der Messias kommt, das ist: der Gesalbte (Christus). Wenn er kommt, wird er uns alles verkünden.” Darauf sagte Jesus zu ihr: „Ich bin es; ich, der mit dir spricht.” (Johannes 4, 25-26).

Messiah, Greek transf. of Hebr. maschiach, ”the anointed“, in the Old Testimony, the ruler of Israel blessed by god by unction. Christos (lat. Christus) is the Greek translation of the word Messiah. According to the prophecies in the Old Testimony the awaited Messiah must be a direct descendant of King David (2nd book of Samuel 7, 12-13). Under his rule all Jews were to return from exile to their home (Hosea 11, 12) and the Temple in Jerusalem was to be restored (Ezekiel 37, 26-27). A time of world peace will commence (Micah 4, 3) and all Jews will follow the Law of God (Ezekiel 37, 24). All of mankind will pray to the Jewish god (Hosea 66, 23). As Jesus met only a few of these conditions Jews did not follow Christian belief that he is the promised Messiah. Jesus only ”ousted“ himself once in the gospels as the promised Messiah. A woman said to him, ”I know that Messiah comes,“ (he who is called Christ). ”When he has come, he will declare to us all things.“ Jesus said to her, ”I am he, the one who speaks to you.“ (John 4, 25-26).
