Josef, auch Joseph, hebr. „Gott gebe Vermehrung”, Ziehvater Jesu und Verlobter der Jungfrau Maria, stammte aus dem Geschlecht des Königs David aus Bethlehem und lebte als Zimmermann in Nazaret (* um 80 v. Chr.). Er hatte vier leibliche Söhne mit Namen Jakobus, Joseph, Simon und Judas und mehrere Töchter (Matthäus 13, 55), nach der Auffassung der Kirchenväter des Ostens aus einer ersten Ehe, und war (nach einer späteren Überlieferung) zur Zeit der Geburt Jesu bereits 80 Jahre alt. Seine letzte Erwähnung in den Evangelien findet sich bei Lukas (2, 41-50), als der zwölfjährige Jesus seinen Eltern beim Besuch des Passafestes in Jerusalem abhanden kommt. Demnach müsste Josef mindestens 92 Jahre alt geworden sein. Im 10. Jh. wurde der 19. März der Gedenktag Josefs, wohl um das Fest der Minerva, der römischen Göttin des Handwerks, zu ersetzen. In vielen katholischen Ländern, so in Spanien, ist der 19. März auch Vatertag.

Josef, also Joseph, Hebr. ”May God increase“, Jesus' foster father and fiancé of the Virgin Mary ( Maria), came from the family of King David from Bethlehem and lived as a carpenter in Nazareth (* around 80 B.C.). He had four real sons named James, Joseph, Simon and Judas and several daughters (Matthew 13, 55), according to the Fathers of the Church of the East from a first marriage, and was (according to later written records) at the time of Jesus' birth already 80 years of age. He is last mentioned in the gospel at Luke (2, 41-50), when the parents of the twelve-year old Jesus lost him during a visit to the Feast of the Passover in Jerusalem. According to this Josef must have become at least 92 years of age. In the 10th century March 19 became the day of remembrance of Josef, presumably to replace the Festival of Minerva, the Roman goddess of handicrafts. In many Catholic countries, such as in Spain, March 19 is also Father's Day.
