Esel, störrisches Huftier zur Last- und Personenbeförderung vor Erfindung des Automobils, eine Art „Trabi” ( DDR) der vorindustriellen Epochen. Obwohl der Esel in der  Weihnachtsgeschichte nicht ausdrücklich erwähnt wird, gehört er neben dem Ochsen seit jeher zum festen Bestand der Krippenfiguren ( Krippe,  Stall) und zur Ikonographie weihnachtlicher Motive in der abendländischen Kunst. So zeigt etwa ein Gemälde von Rembrandt (* 1606 † 1669)  Maria mit dem  Christkind auf dem Rücken eines Esels (Die Flucht nach Ägypten, 1627). Eine besonders schöne Nacherzählung der Weihnachtsgeschichte für Kinder (ab 5 J.), aus der Perspektive des Esels geschildert, stammt von der schwedischen Autorin Gunhild Sehlin (Marias kleiner Esel).

Although the donkey is not expressly mentioned in the Christmas story ( Weihnachtsgeschichte), next to the ox it has ever since been a fixed item of the figures in the crib ( Krippe,  Stall) and of the iconography of Christmas motifs in Occidental art. A painting by Rembrandt (* 1606 † 1669), for example shows Mary ( Maria) with the Christ-child ( Christkind) on the back of a donkey (The Flight Into Egypt, 1627). A particularly nice recount of the Christmas story for children (from the age of 5) told from the donkey's perspective was written by the Swedish author Gunhild Sehlin (Mary's Small Donkey).
