Bescherung, heute neben dem  Weihnachtsmahl der eigentliche Höhepunkt des Weihnachtsfestes im Familienkreis und als solcher kritischer Gipfel der  Weihnachtsstimmung. Die Teilnehmer beschenken sich gegenseitig ( Geschenk) und erfüllen einander dadurch (vermeintlich) lang gehegte Wünsche, im Idealfall in Gestalt einer positiven   Überraschung. Kritisch, weil stets am Rande einer möglichen   Katastrophe balancierend, ist die Bescherung aus vielerlei Gründen. Erstens gilt es, den jüngsten Teilnehmern die Illusion zu bewahren, die Geschenke kämen nicht von den Erwachsenen, sondern vom  Christkind oder  Weihnachtsmann ( Wunschzettel). Zweitens muss vermieden werden, dass sich Geschenk und Gegengeschenk im materiellen oder ideellen Wert zu sehr unterscheiden. Ist dies doch der Fall, sind drittens alle Anzeichen von Enttäuschung ( Tränen) unbedingt zu unterdrücken. Ironisch nennt man das Misslingen eines oder mehrerer dieser Vorhaben auch „eine schöne Bescherung”.

the giving of Christmas presents, these days, in addition to the Christmas dinner ( Weihnachtsmahl), it is the actual highlight of the Christmas festivities, spent with the family and as such constitutes the critical summit of the Christmas atmosphere ( Weihnachtstimmung). The participants give one another a gift ( Geschenk), thereby (supposedly) fulfilling long held wishes, ideally in the form of a positive surprise ( Überraschung). The Bescherung is critical for many a reason, as always balancing on the brink of a possible catastrophe ( Katastrophe). First of all the aim is to uphold the illusion for the young ones that the gifts are not gifts from the grown-ups, but from the Christ-child ( Christkind) or from Santa Claus ( Weihnachtsmann) ( Wunschzettel / Wish list). Then it must be avoided at all cost that the material or non-material value of the gift given and the gift received does not differ too greatly. However, if this is the case, all signs of disappointment ( Tränen / tears) must be suppressed. Ironically, the failure of one or several of these projects is also termed a ”schöne Bescherung“, meaning a fine mess.
