Die vier Wochen vor Weihnachten stehen symbolisch für die 4000 Jahre von der Schöpfung der Welt bis zur Ankunft des Messias. Die Ursprünge der Adventsliturgie gehen auf Papst Gregor I. (*540 † 604) zurück, endgültig festgelegt wurde sie für die gesamte Christenheit durch Papst Pius V. (*1504 † 1572). Nur die Mailänder feiern bis heute sechs Adventssonntage. - In katholischen Gebieten galten in der Adventszeit Fastengebote.
